Kari Lake, the leading Republican candidate for Senate in Arizona, was quick to denounce the state Supreme Court’s ruling upholding an 1864 law banning nearly all abortions in the state. But in that 2022 appearance, Ms. Lake cited the 1864 law’s number in the Arizona state code. But the revival of the 1864 law in Arizona amounts to something of a nightmare scenario for Republicans in the state. Starting in the 2022 midterms and in governors’ races, special elections and ballot measures, the abortion issue has helped Democrats notch victories across the country. The Democrats also trained their focus on Ms. Lake, posting other remarks from 2022, during which she expressed strict anti-abortion stances.

Here's happens if a sitting president dies while running for reelection? And it raises another obvious question: what happens if a sitting president dies while running for reelection? Well, in the immediate aftermath, we would get President Kamala Harris — who would be the first female president and just its second Black president. AdvertisementThe US has a clear presidential order of succession outlined in the Constitution and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, saying that if the president dies, the vice president takes over. AdvertisementIf the president died during primary season — which ends in mid-June — some states may postpone their scheduled primaries.

Nikki Haley is campaigning at a grueling pace as she fights to stay competitive in the Republican presidential contest, crisscrossing Iowa and New Hampshire to find a clear lane forward in a race dominated by Donald J. Trump and his mountain of legal problems. By many measures, Ms. Haley is running a healthy campaign poised to capitalize on rivals’ mistakes. She has built a robust fund-raising operation and her team has cash to spare: A super PAC backing her this week announced a $13 million advertising effort in Iowa and New Hampshire. And at events, voters often like what she has to say. “She is not pounding the pulpit,” Eric Ray, 42, a Republican legal defense consultant in Iowa, said after watching her speak at a barbecue restaurant last weekend in Iowa City, adding that she had his vote.

High-ranking Democrats confided in the New York Times that they've lost hope in Kamala Harris. Harris' aides expected the Democratic sources to speak well of her to the Times, but they didn't. The sources told the Times they don't believe Harris has what it takes to be a leader of the party. "Even some Democrats whom her own advisers referred reporters to for supportive quotes confided privately that they had lost hope in her," the Times reported as part of an article on the party's confidence in Harris published on Monday. Yet, they told the Times that they've started to doubt Harris' ability to be a potential future leader of the Democratic party.
“Senate Democrats have been committed to restoring balance to the federal judiciary with professionally and personally diverse judges,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told NBC News on Saturday night. Senate Republican leaders told NBC News before the election that if they took the majority, they would use their power over the floor to compel Biden to send more centrist judges that GOP senators could support. He said Democrats keeping control means that if a Supreme Court vacancy were to open up, Biden’s nominee would be assured a vote. While the current 50-member Democratic caucus has been unified behind Biden’s judicial nominees, a 51st seat for the party could further embolden it. As a practical matter, that means Democrats currently need Republican sign-off to confirm judges in red states.
Former President Donald Trump was demonstrably weakened — and President Joe Biden strengthened — by Tuesday's midterm election results, just as the two begin to circle each other for a possible 2024 rematch. Democrats were in position to lose fewer seats in Congress in this year's midterms than Republicans did when Trump was president in 2018. "It’s not even a good night,” one former Trump campaign official said of the GOP's performance, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid angering fellow Republicans. Because it can’t be both," the former Trump campaign official said. "If Democrats want to lose the general election in 2024, they should start screwing with Joe Biden."
By historical standards, Gen X should be in charge of the US by now. Think of them as the godparents of the "Xennials" — those born in the late 1970s or early 1980s who aren't fully Gen X or millennial. No matter whether you deny the 61-year-old Obama is a boomer, Gen X is starting to get up there in age. Michael Ciaglo-Pool/Getty ImagesWhat's the US missing without a Gen X president? "It's like seeing a ghost that doesn't appear," she said of any expectation the presidency would just suddenly open up for Gen X.
